Living in the Mystery

Then Mary said, "Let it be with me according to your word." -- Luke 1:38

Activity: Write questions you wonder about and seal them in an envelope marked "why?" Pray for the faith to live with mystery.

Okay, honestly, even the reflection for this one was kind of lame. It almost seems to suggest that further inquiry and asking questions is a detriment to faith (which I'm sure wasn't the author's intent). I think a better message is this: Whether you're secular or religious, I think it's a common understanding that human beings will never know everything. Our brains are simply just not big enough! Because of this, the first step is to accept that there will be just some things that we can never know and understand, whether it's how quantum physics works or why evil exists in a universe created by a loving God. But that doesn't mean to stop questioning, or that questioning automatically means losing your faith! Intellectual inquiry has led to some of the most beautiful scholarly and creative works that the universe has ever known, and while not every question about the mystery of our faith will yield such works, at the very least it never hurts to make yourself more informed.

Prayer: God of wisdom, may we have the heart of Mary, full of trust and open to the mystery of your ways.
