Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. -- Matthew 6:12
Activity: Join hands and pray the "Our Father" as a sign of mutual commitment to clemency and forgiveness.
Forgiveness can be hard. Really. Especially when the hurt is really deep. It's easy to say you forgive someone, and you might really be trying to mean it, and even think you do for awhile, but then something will come up that will make you realize you still haven't let go. I admit that I'm still struggling with that at times. I still think about people who made high school hell for me; about those who made fun of me to my face or behind my back; about those who, probably out of jealousy, hoped I would amount to nothing. And I think about how wonderful and amazing it's going to be to see those people at a 10, 15, 20 year reunion, and rub their noses in what my life has turned out to be. Look! I'm getting my Ph.D.! I'm married (or will be soon) to a wonderful, amazing man who makes close to 6 figures a year! I have traveled the world! I'm GORGEOUS now! And I realize that this attitude--this desire to flaunt my success to the people who made me hurt--is vengeance. I haven't completely forgiven yet; I certainly haven't forgotten. It's something I'm still working on, and probably will be for some time. And this is because anger and vengeance are addicting; for awhile, they give you the strength to keep going on, the motivation to be better and stronger than before, but sustained use of these make you dependent while they poison you. But, as they say, admitting the problem is the first step; I am not yet a lost cause. Here's to a complete recovery...
Prayer: Lord, we are forever indebted for your mercy and forgiveness. May we share those precious gifts with others.
