So PLEASE stop sending me invites to the frakking "Save Driscoll!" stuff.
To put it succinctly, I hated high school. That doesn't make me at all unique--everyone hated high school. The thing is, I didn't just hate high school because I was an awkward, hormonal, angsty teenager (though that was certainly true). And it's also not to say that my high school years were completely devoid of happiness--I thankfully had my friends to keep me sane and grounded. But you have to understand that I was made fun of a lot. Some of it was to my face, a lot of it was behind my back, and it still amazes me how people think I didn't know about it. A lot of people thought I was a snob, and I suppose being absolutely socially awkward and shy (yes, there was a time when I was shy) led to that. And I pretended not to care because I wanted to seem rebellious, no matter what anyone says, all they want is to fit in in high school. And how could I do that? I had my father tell me this; and I literally had other students tell me this: "Jenni, you have to dumb yourself down. You can't be like you are." So I did. At least, I tried.
Am I expected to miss a place that forced me to be someone I wasn't for four years? A place where I had to act a certain way just so I wouldn't have to hear people snickering behind my back in the hallway? And I'm not being melodramatic; I remember walking down the hallway freshman year by Mrs. Bates' old classroom and hearing that group of guys who shall remain nameless call out, "Hey, Fong!" and laugh when I said hi back. I remember the snickering whenever it would get announced that I got a high score at an Academic Bowl meet. I remember the jokes that were my high school proms. So no, I am not sorry.
I won't stop others, however, from trying to keep it open: Visit http://www.savedriscoll.org to donate and help.
